Director's Description
The Mayo Clinic Arizona ACHD Clinic is part of the tri-institutional Mayo Clinic Network (Rochester MN, Phoenix/Scottsdale AZ and Jacksonville FL) and locally employs two full-time experienced non-invasive adult congenital cardiologists trained and certified in ACHD care, a full-time cardiovascular disease trained nurse practitioner and two experienced invasive pediatric cardiologists from Rochester MN on a part-time basis, performing diagnostic and interventional procedures on site. Echocardiographic assessment is performed by congenital heart disease trained sonographers and interpreted by board-certified congenital cardiologists. Three-dimensional cardiac CT and MRI are performed on site by board-certified cardiologists in congenital cardiac MRI, in collaboration with five dedicated cardiovascular radiologists, experienced in CT and MRI. The program benefits from the expertise of a nationally ranked Heart Failure/Transplant service, offering ventricular assist device technology to selected patients.
Weekly congenital heart disease medical-surgical case reviews occur within the Mayo Clinic system and are coordinated from Mayo Clinic in Rochester. These rounds offer opportunities for audio & video conferencing and discussion of challenging case management for the benefit of patients followed at the three sites.
Electrophysiologic testing is performed on site by electrophysiologists experienced in congenital heart disease. General cardiac catheterization, including urgent percutaneous coronary artery and elective valvular procedures are performed on site. General cardiac and heart transplant surgery are performed on site for moderate complexity congenital heart defects while highly complex surgical ACHD repairs and procedures are referred to and performed in Mayo Clinic Rochester.
Patient inquiries are received by a dedicated secretary and nurse coordinator who ensure proper communication between patients and the ACHD Clinic staff and coordinate information transfer and test appointments in a timely fashion.
