Joseph A. Dearani

Dr. Dearani received his Bachelor's degree in Biology/Spanish from Fordham University and then his Medical degree from Georgetown University. He began his General Surgery residency at Georgetown and then interrupted clinical training for two years of basic science research in cardiovascular surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He then completed his general surgical training at Georgetown. Postgraduate fellowship training in Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgery was taken at the Mayo Clinic followed by a fellowship in congenital cardiac surgery and transplantation at Loma Linda University. Dr. Dearani joined the staff at the Mayo Clinic in 1996 where he is currently Professor of Surgery and the Program Director for the Thoracic Surgery Residency.

Dr. James Perry joined the Children’s Heart Clinic in Minneapolis in 2007 after serving as Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Yale University and as Medical Director of the successful Yale-New Haven Adult Congenital Heart Program. Dr. Perry is Co-Directing the new Minnesota Adult Congenital Cardiac (MACC) program in partnership with Children’s Hospitals of Minnesota, the Minneapolis Heart Institute, and Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Dr. Perry’s area of specialty is congenital heart as well as pediatric electrophysiology, device implantation, and the overall management of adults with congenital heart defects. He graduated from Princeton University and the University of Rochester (NY) where he received his MD degree. He then completed his residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and his cardiology fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Perry then spent 12 years at Children’s Hospital of San Diego, where he was Director of Cardiology and started the adult CHD program there. Dr. Perry now makes his home in Minneapolis with his wife, Nicole. He enjoys outdoor activities, surfing and supporting the Surfrider Foundation.

Michael A Gatzoulis, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Cardiology, Congenital Heart Disease and Consultant Cardiologist and Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Centre at the Royal Brompton Hospital and the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College School of Medicine in London, UK. Professor Gatzoulis, a graduate of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece, completed his post-graduate training in London, UK and Toronto, Canada. He edited several cardiology textbooks, and has served as Associate or Guest Editor or Reviewer for most major journals in the cardiovascular field. He is also the author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications. Professor Gatzoulis is currently the President of the International Society for Adult Congenital Cardiac Disease. His main interest is to promote the needs of the patient with congenital heart disease, including delivery of optimal care, translationary research, training and education.
